About Pench National Park

Pench National Park is in Madhya Pradesh (India). The name of the national park is derived from the Pench River, which flows through the National Park.

It is interesting to note that, it is the Pench Forest which has inspired Rudyard Kipling to write the popular novel ‘The Jungle Book’. The national park has 3 gates to enter. Among all, Turia Gate is certainly the most accessible of them all.

Nagpur Airport, which is around 90 km or 55 miles is the nearest airport. Other option is Jabalpur Airport, which is 200 km away from the park.

Best Time to Visit Pench National Park

February to June is the best time to spot wildlife. The chances of spotting animals increases in summers as the grasses dry and the visibility of the forest is better.

Mid October to February is also a good time as the weather remains very pleasant for the jeep safaris.

During the monsoons, which is from July to September, the park remains closed.

What to See in Pench National Park

Pench National Park is very rich in fauna and it’s abode to a large number of endangered species. The most dominant predator is Tiger and there are around 25 of them in these prey-rich woodlands. Here you would find animals like Dhol (Indian Wild Dog), Leopard, Hyena, Wolf, Jackal and Jungle cat, Sambhar, Chital, Gaur, Muntjac, Langur, Wild boar, Rhesus macaques.  

There are more than 170 species of birds comprising various migratory ones like Peafowl, Crow pheasant, Junglefowl,Red-vented bulbul, Crimson-breasted barbet, Magpie Robin, Lesser whistling teal, Racket-tailed drongo, Egret, pintail, Shoveler, Herons to name a few.

Places to Visit Near Pench National Park

There are 3 famous National Parks, which you can visit if you are visiting the Pench forest. 

Tadoba National Park : Tadoba National Park is one of the best options since the common airport is Nagpur airport. Tadoba is one of the best national parks to in India to spot a tiger. It is about 250 kms / or 180 miles  away and takes about 6 – 7 hours.

Bandhavgarh National Park : This is one of the most famous Tiger Reserves in India. There are some great zones for tiger spotting in this National Park. It is about 340 kms / or 210 miles  away and takes about 9 – 10 hours.

Kanha National Park : Kanha National Park is an abode to over 1000 species of flower plants. It has important population of leopards, royal Bengal tiger, sloth bear, barasingha, Indian wild dog, etc.. It is about 185 kms / or 115 miles  away and takes about 5 – 6 hours.

If you visit Bandhavgarh National Park or Kanha National park, then you can also visit Khajuraho Temples and Jabalpur, which have charms of their own. Khajuraho, in particular, is the land of the Kamasutras. It is known for the exotic and erotic sculptures on the walls of the temples.
