About Nagarhole National Park

Nagarhole National Park is located in Karnataka and is a part of Nilgiri biosphere reserve.  The park is famous for its rich population of animals and birds. The park has 47 streams, 41 artificial tanks, four lakes with water throughout the year. Apart from these, it also has 4 perennial streams, a reservoir and a dam. 

Thus, there are lots of activities you can enjoy inside the park. For example, one can enjoy coracle boat riding facility on the Kabini River. There are several swamps in this region. No wonder, this diverse landscape promotes the population of various species of animals and birds in this region.

The nearest airports are located in Mysore and Bangalore. Bangalore is the nearest international airport to the park. It is located 236 km away from Nagarhole national park. Mysore airport is located just 96 km from the park. However, connectivity to Mysore airport is sporadic. So, for all practical purposes, Bangalore airport is where tourists lands if they want to visit Nagarhole National Park. So, one of the best option is to start from Bangalore and continue the journey through Mysore and Bandipur National Park and Mudumalai National Park.

Best Time to Visit Nagarhole National Park

The best time to visit is from October to May. During this period, spotting animals and birds is easy during Nagarhole safari. Travel within the park is also easier. It is better to avoid during the monsoon season. During heavy rain, the park might be closed for visitors. In fact, the Nagarhole Safari may also be called off if the tracks get washed due to heavy monsoon rains.

Nagarhole National Park Wildlife

During your safaris or your stay in the resorts, you might catch sight of the majestic Bengal Tigers and Leopards. Some of the other prominent animals here are the sloth bear, ussuri dhole, antelope, barking beer, sambar deer and elephant. You can also find many jungle bison here. In places where bamboo trees are found, elephants are very common. Other common animals to spot are jungle cat, leopard cat, gray langur, civet, mongoose, bonnet macaque, Indian giant flying squirrel, hare, pangolin and others.

Nagarhole National Park is famous for bird watching too. More than 250 species of birds are found here. The birds are commonly found near the Kabini River. Some of the birds you will find here are blue bearded bee-eater, Malabar whistling thrush, common osprey, duck and herons.

Here you will also find reptiles like Muggers, Common vine snake, Bamboo pit viper, Indian rock python, Indian monitor lizard, Common wolf snake and others.

There are 96 species of dung beetles and more than 60 species of ants in the park. Most interesting ant species in the park is the jumping ant, which can jump up to one meter high.

Places to Visit Near Nagarhole National Park

Since it is assumed that you would come from Bangalore, there are quite a few things you would find on the way. Firstly, you can spend a day or two in the garden city of Bangalore, visiting the Vidhan Soudha (Assembly House), Lalbagh Botanical Gardens, Tipu Sultan Summer Palace etc. Then you would go to Mysore, followed by Bandipur and Mudumalai National Parks.

Mysore: Mysore is famously known as The City of Palaces. It is known for its dazzling royal heritage, intricate architecture, its famed silk sarees, yoga, and sandalwood, to name just a few. Some places to visit here are Mysore Palace, Somanathapura Temple, Brindavan Gardens, St. Philomena’s Church etc. It is about 90 kms or 50 Miles,  which takes about 3 hours.

Bandipur and Mudumalai National Park: Bandipur and Mudumalai National Park are regarded among the most beautiful and the better-managed national parks of India. You would be able to find a lot of animals and birds in those forests. It is about 90 kms or 55 miles, which takes about 3 to 4 hours.

Ooty: Ooty, also known as Udagamandalam, is a hill station in Tamil Nadu serves as a very popular tourist destination for anyone looking for a picturesque place to relax and unwind. Some places to visit in Ooty are Nilgiri Mountain Railway, Ooty Lake,Rose Garden, Botanical Gardens. It is about 165 kms or 100 miles, which takes about 5 – 6 hours
