About Bandipur National Park

If you are in Bangalore, then Bandipur Tiger Reserve is the nearest National Park for you. In fact, you can spend a night in Mysore and then proceed for Bandipur Tiger Reserve. Bangalore, which is about 250 km or 170 miles away, is the nearest airport.

Best Time to Visit Bandipur National Park

October to May is the best time to visit the park. During peak winter season, migration birds are quite common. Spotting animals during summer is very easy. Animals come to water sources to quench their thirst during summer with their little ones. Monsoon is not the best time to the park.

Wildlife in Bandipur National Park

The park is a habitat for a number of wild animals such as Elephants and Tigers. Apart from these, you can spot Bonner macaque, Dhole, Civet, Jungle cat, Indian palm, Giant flying squirrel, Striped hyena, Rusty-spotted cat, Nilgiritahr, Leopard, Hanuman langur, Cat leopard, Four horned antelope, Indian hare red and others

Birdwatching is an important activity during Bandipur national Park safari. Top birds found in this park are Peafowl, Junglefowl, Drongos, Red-headed vultures, Flowerpeckers, Indian rollers, Crested serpent eagles, Bee-eaters, Hawk eagles, Kingfishers, Ospreys

There are more than 200 species of birds in the park. The breeding season of birds, start right before the monsoon season. Numerous beetle varieties are also spotted here. Many new species of butterflies and beetles that are yet to be identified are also found here. Turtles, crocodiles and frogs are also found here.

Places Around Bandipur National Park

Mysore: Famously known as The City of Palaces, Mysore is one of the most flamboyant places in the country. It is replete with the history of its dazzling royal heritage, intricate architecture, its famed silk saree, and sandalwood. Some places to visit here are Mysore Palace, Somanathapura Temple, Brindavan Gardens, St. Philomena’s Church etc. It is about 80 kms or 50 Miles and takes about 2-3 hours.

Mudumalai National Park: This is an extension of the Bandipur National Park and comes under the state of Tamil Nadu.

Nagarhole National Park: It is also located in Karnataka. It is a part of Nilgiri biosphere reserve. It is now under consideration for recognition as a heritage site. The park is filled with waterfalls, hills, valleys, streams and forests. It is about 90 kms or 55 miles and takes about 3 – 4 hours.

Ooty: Once regarded as the summer headquarters of the East India Company, Ooty, also known as Udagamandalam, is a hill station in Tamil Nadu which serves as a very popular tourist destination. Some places to visit in Ooty are Nilgiri Mountain Railway, Ooty Lake,Rose Garden, Botanical Gardens.
