About Gir National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary

Gir Forest National Park is famous for Gir lions.In fact, it is the only place on earth where you get to see the gorgeous Asiatic Lions. Apart from the lions, it is home to a lot of other wildlife. And for that it is very popular among all nature lovers and wildlife photographers.

The nearest airport to Gir is located at Diu, which at a distance of around 90 km. You can also reach Gir National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary from the airport at Rajkot, which is located approximately 160 km away.

Best Time to Visit Gir National Park

Due to the pleasant cliamte, December to March is the best season to visit the park. Although, April and May are very hot, they are considered as the best months for wildlife viewing and photography. The protected area of Gir National Park is closed from 16th June to 15th October every year, which is the monsoon season.

Wildlife in Gir National Park

The land of the Asiatic Gir lion is the ideal reserve for the tremendous varieties of wild creatures to roam freely and safely. To make a royal journey towards the grand rugged hills of Sasan Gir, the wildlife lovers can get a fabulous opportunity to witness around 2,375 distinct fauna species of Gir to include around 38 species of mammals, 300 species of birds, 37 species of reptiles and more than 2,000 species of insects.

The group of the carnivores in Gir is truly comprised of the presence of Asiatic gir lion, Indian Leopards, Indian Cobras, Sloth bears, Jungle cats, Golden Jackals, Indian Palm Civets, Striped Hyenas, Indian Mongoose and Ratels, Desert cats and Rusty-spotted cats exist but can be rarely seen.

The main herbivores genres of the residents of Gir are Chital, Nilgai (or Blue bull), Antelope, Sambar, Four-horned Chinkara and Wild boar, Blackbucks from the surrounding area can be occasionally identified in the sanctuary.

The group of smaller mammals will also include Porcupine and Hare where Pangolin is rare in Gir  forest National park. The reptiles are represented by the Marsh crocodile hir Tortoise and the Monitor Lizard in the water areas of the sanctuary. Snakes and Pythons too can be found in the lush bushes and along the streams. Being adopted under the Indian Crocodile Conservation Project in 1977, the Gujarat State Forest Department has used the reserve area where the area is also flourished with more than 300 species of birds. The scavenger group of birds has 6 recorded species of Vultures.

Some of the typical species of Gir include Crested Serpent Eagle, Brown Fish Owl, Crested Hawk-eagle, Endangered Bonelli’s Eagle, Rock Bush-Quail, Indian Eagle-Owl, Black-headed Oriole, Pygmy Woodpecker, Crested Treeswift and Indian Pitta.

Places to Visit Near Gir Lion National Park

There are quite a few places to visit around Gir Lion National Park. 

Diu Island: Diu Island, which was once ruled by the Portuguese, is now a Union Territory. The island is a popular beach destination. Not only the beach, but because of the Portuguese there is a 16th century Portuguese Fort, the impressive St Paul’s Church, Diu Museum and old houses in Diu. You can also find Flamingos, storks and waders at the creeks of Diu. It is about 65 kms or 40 Miles, which takes about 3 – 4 hours. Since you are likely to touchdown Diu, because of the airport, you may as well spend some relaxing time in the beaches.

Somnath: This is one of the holy shrines of Lord Shiva, which is considered as one of the 12 jyotirlingas. Somnath also has Lord Krishna’s cenotaph and bathing ghats at Triveni Tirth, a medieval Sun Temple, the historic Ahilya Temple, Bakhla Tirth and a cave temple. It is about 65 kms or 40 Miles and takes about 3 – 4 hours.

Dwarka: Dwarka is one of the seven holiest cities of Hinduism. Dwarka has an important Krishna Temple, an attractive 12th-13th century Rukmani Temple, Sankracharya’s Math and the Nageshwar Jyotirlinga as its major attraction. It is about 280 kms or 170 Miles, which takes about 6 – 7 hours.
