About Periyar Tiger Reserve

Periyar Tiger Reserve is one the most visited National Parks in India. One of the reason is the location. Just like Ranthambore is located in a strategic location of Golden Triangle, the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Thekkady of Kerala, which is a great advantage. Because, Thekkady, in itself, is a very popular tourist destination for foreigners. The fame of Thekkady is because of its natural beauty and unique Spice Plantations. And on top of it when you add the unique Periyar National Park, then it is evident that it becomes a major tourist attraction. 

Cochin International Airport is the nearest airport, which is about 150 km or 100 miles away, which takes about 5 – 6 hours. 

Periyar Tiger Reserve Thekkady is one of the most visited national parks in India. The Periyar National Park Thekkady is known for the unique Periyar National Park Location in Kerala, predominantly with water bodies and amidst the Spice Plantation of Thekkady. So, in that sense the Periyar National Park Safari is very unique. It would be on huge boats as you navigate the huge Periyar Lake. Best Time to Visit Periyar National Park

If you are looking for the best time to Visit Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, then October to March is the best time. Many migratory birds are easy to spot during this time. Some of the interesting activities are rafting and boat cruise. During April and May it is easy to spot animals when they come to quench the thirst near the lake.

There can be restrictions to movement in the park during the monsoons, which is from June  to August.

Wildlife in in Periyar National Park

The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is home to a variety of animals, which includes different species of mammals, birds. reptiles and fishes.

Mammals: There are 35 major mammals in this park, which includes many elephants and tigers. According to the recent estimate,  about 24 Bengal Tigers are found here. Other mammals which you may spot here are White tiger, Indian elephants, Flying squirrel, Wild pig, Sambar, Gaur, Fruit bat,  Nilgiri marten, Nilgiri langur, Sloth bear, Jungle cat and others.

Birds: When it comes to birds, there are more than 250 species of birds in this park. This includes numerous migration birds too. Some of the birds you can watch out for are Malabar grey hornbill, White bellied blue flycatcher, Sunbird, Great hornbill,  Sri Lanka frog mouth, Black necked stork, Oriental darter, Brahminy kite, Little spider hunter, Eagle owl, Nilgiri wood pigeon and others. There is also a large variety of more than 150 butterfly species here

Reptiles: Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is also home to around 45 species of reptiles. This includes turtles, lizards and snakes. Other common reptiles to spot here include Striped coral snake, Malabar pit viper, King cobra and others. Major amphibians to spot in the park are:Malabar gliding frog, Bicolored frog, Asian toad and others.

Fishes: In the lakes and rivers found in the park, there are around .40 species of fishes. Here you would find fishes like Priyar barb, Periyar trout, channa barb, Travancore loach and others.

 

Places to Visit near Periyar National Park

When you are visiting Periyar National Park, which is in Thekkady, you obviously would visit the other places in Thekkady, especially the notable Spice Plantation. Apart from Thekkady the nearby places, which are commonly visited by foreigners are the Munnar, Alappuzha,Kumarakom, Kochi etc.   

Munnar: Sprawling tea plantations, picturesque towns, winding lanes and holiday facilities make Munnar a popular resort town. It is about 90 kms or 55 miles and takes about 4-5 hours.

Alleppey: It is famous for its boat races, backwater holidays, beaches, marine products and coir industry. Alappuzha Beach is a popular picnic spot. It is about 140 kms or 85 miles and takes about 5 – 6 hours.

Kumarakom: An enchanting backwater destination, Kumarakom offers visitors many other leisure options. Boating and fishing facilities are available. It is about 130 kms or 80 miles and takes about 4 – 5 hours.

Kochi: It is the most popular tourist destination for both domestic and international visitors. It is among the most visited tourist destinations in India. Some attractions famous in Kochi are Marine Drive, Fort Kochi, Hill Palace etc. It is about 155 kms or 95 miles and takes about 5-6 hours
