Houseboat Experience in Kumarakom

The Beauty of Kumarakom Backwaters lies in its tranquility. Glide across the calm canals, past the small fishing villages and further towards the edge of the sea. Houses of the locals are lined by the banks of the backwaters. They all have their own canoes and boats for commuting from one place to another. Also, there are schools on either side. One can even see children studying in their classrooms. One enters many small canals while cruising.

The islands and paddy farms on either side are separated by these lagoons. After some time, one enters into the huge lake, out of the backwaters and could see the magnanimity of the Vembanad lake, the largest freshwater lake in Kerala. The backwater houses a variety of species of both flora and fauna. It’s rich in marine life especially the exclusive kumarakom karimeen or pearl spotted fish, konju or tiger prawns, njandu or crabs, chemmeen or prawns and many more.

How much Time should you spend on the Houseboat?

In fact, there are just two options to experience the Houseboat ride. Firstly, a Day Trip. So, you embark on the houseboat in the morning, around 11 AM and spend the rest of the day in the houseboat and disembark by evening, around 5:30 PM. Needless to mention, lunch and snacks will be served on board. While this experience is great, an even greater would be to spend a night in the Houseboat. That is the second option.

If you wish to spend a night in the Houseboat then you can also enjoy the quietness of the lagoons at night. Houseboats don’t sail at night. So around sunset they are docked on the bank of the lagoon. Then you can spend the evening relaxing in the houseboat. Some houseboats can also arrange cultural programs in the evening, when informed early. Have dinner at the end of the day.

When you wake up in the morning, have a typical Kerala breakfast (English or American breakfast is also available). You can enjoy the beauty of the lagoon in the morning, something you will miss when you take just the Day Trip.

Whichever option you take, it is surely going to be a memorable experience for you.
