Chinese Fishing Nets

Locally known as Cheena Wala, the Chinese fishing nets are quite popular sight to witness around the beaches of Kochi. Technically, these nets are fixed at a particular location from the shore which are used through mechanical contrivance from across a distance of about 20 metres across.

As you may note, this unique fishing style was introduced in the 14th century by the Chinese traders. But the best part of it is the silhouette it creates during sunset. So, the best time to visit this place is during the Sunset when you can get great photos. Capture the beautiful sight of the sunset  on the background of the  Chinese Fishing net.

Mattancherry Palace

The Mattancherry Palace is one of the finest examples of the Kerala style of architecture mixed with colonial influences. In fact, the Palace was built and gifted by the Portuguese as a present to the king of Cochin around 1545. Then, the Dutch carried out some extensions and renovations in the palace in 1663, and thereafter it was popularly called Dutch Palace. Today, it is a portrait gallery of the Cochin Rajas.  It is also notable for some of the best mythological murals in India, which are in the best traditions of Hindu temple art. Over the centuries, the influence of the Portuguese were supplanted by the Dutch, who they took over Mattancherry in 1663.

Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica

The Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica, which is at Fort Kochi, is one of the nine Basilicas in Kerala. Counted as one of the heritage edifices of Kerala, this church is one of the finest and most impressive churches in India.

No wonder, it is visited by tourists the whole year round. Not only is it a place of devotion, but also a center of historic significance, which is endowed with architectural and artistic grandeur and colours of the gothic style. The basilica serves as the Cathedral church of the Diocese of Cochin. Originally, it was built by the Portuguese and elevated to a Cathedral by Pope Paul IV in 1558.

Saint Francis Church

Saint Francis Church, which was originally built in 1503, is one of the oldest European churches in India and has great historical significance as a mute witness to the European colonial struggle in the subcontinent. The Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama, who died in Kochi in 1524 was originally buried in this church. However, after fourteen years his remains were removed to Lisbon.

Paradesi Synagogue

The Paradesi Synagogue, which is the oldest active synagogue in the Commonwealth of Nations, is located in Kochi. Constructed in 1568, it is one of seven synagogues of the Malabar Yehudan or Yehudan Mappila people or Cochin Jewish community in the Kingdom of Cochin.

The Paradesi Synagogue has the Scrolls of the Law, several gold crowns received as gifts, many Belgian glass chandeliers, and a brass-railed pulpit. It houses the 10th-century copper plates of privileges given to Joseph Rabban, who is the earliest known Cochin Jew. The floor of the synagogue, which is composed of hundreds of Chinese, 18th-century, hand-painted porcelain tiles, each of which is unique, is truly mesmerizing. The synagogue has an 18th-century clock tower, which, along with other parts of the complex, was restored between 1998 and 1999 under the direction of the World Monuments Fund.
