You can often find the author Ruskin Bond browsing the Cambridge Bookstore. This centre point is filled with shops, eateries, cafes, and tourist spots. An unmissable tourist place in Mussoorie, the Mall Road is the best place to take a stroll or sit and relax in any of the famous bakeries or cafes.

Day 2Local Sightseeing

Camel’s Back Road – Located in the heart of Mussoorie, the Camel’s Back Road is a 3 km long road lined with natural rocks shaped like a camel’s hump. It overlooks the Doon Valley and offers a stunning view of the Himalayas. It is also a popular place for viewing the sunrise and the sunset. Taking a long walk along this road or coming here for an early morning jog is the best way to explore what this beautiful road has to offer.

Gun Hill – Said to be an extinct volcano, the Gun Hill is the second-highest point in Mussoorie. The scene from the top of this hill is a panoramic view of the snow-clad Himalayan ranges right beside the widespread Doon Valley and a full view of the hill station of Mussoorie. The Gun Hill, located 400 ft above the Mall Road, is a popular attraction, especially amongst the photographers and nature lovers. The highlight of Gun Hill is the ropeway which provides a scenic view of the Himalayan ranges.

Lal Tibba – Being the highest point in the area, Lal Tibba is one of the most stunning viewpoints in the region. Lal Tibba affords breathtaking views of Nilkantha peak (6,596 meters) in Badrinath, Kedarnath peak (6,940 meters). It is also a popular sunrise and sunset point.  In the form of a small terrace, La Tibba has mesmerizing views of the Tibet border. The place is relaxing and has remains of British Architecture.

Christ Church –Located in the centre of the city, this serene religious place is considered one of the first churches built in the Himalayan Ranges. Built in Gothic architectural style, the church is crowded during the weekends.  The beautiful pre-Raphaelite stained glass windows, representing the life events of Jesus Christ, fascinate every onlooker.

Kempty Falls – Kempty Falls is one the most popular tourist attraction and picnic spot in Mussoorie. Surrounded by high mountain cliffs, Kempty Falls is nestled at an altitude of around 4500 ft above the sea level. The pond formed at the bottom of the falls makes an excellent spot for swimming and bathing. A flight of stairs leads to the pond where one can soak in the fun with friends and family. Quite famous among the tourists as a picnic spot, this perennial waterfall is crowded almost throughout the year.

You would also see a lot of cars and transport agencies offering local sightseeing or visit to further up in the mountains. On the river bed, you would find people relaxing, some trying yoga, some taking a leisure boat ride and some practicing river rafting, though the river rafting activity is under the scanner these days. You can easily spend the whole day loitering around Laxman Jhula.

BEATLES ASHRAM – The Beatles Ashram is not far from Laxman Jhula. Originally known as Maharishi Mahesh Yogi Ashram, it is famous for the visit of the famous English Band during the 1970s. Once you cross the Laxman Jhula, move to your right. You need to go through the busy market and literally see it end. Then you would find some small buildings, their look and feel suggesting that they have been there for decades. When the road almost ends, take a left. All along the river, Ganga Ganga will be to your right. The Beatles Ashram has a deserted look now Don’t miss the meditation “domes” especially the graffiti in George Harrison’s one. You are bound to get goose-bumps.

THE EVENING “AARTI” OR WORSHIPPING OF THE RIVER – The evening aarti in Rishikesh at Triveni Ghat is the most famous in Rishikesh. It’s the worship of the River Ganga, which is very unique in this part of the world. You can also watch the same in Parmarth Niketan Ashram and a few more other places.
