Why You cannot Ignore the Invaluable Tips Before you Plan your Ladakh Trip

The Word is AMS or Acute Mountaineering Syndrome

Leh Airport is at an altitude of 10,000 feet or 3250 m above sea level. You would typically arrive from a plan, like Delhi, which is not even 1000 feet above sea level. The huge difference in altitude is not easy for your body to adapt immediately. If you are not careful, AMS or Acute Mountaineering Syndrome can kick off and one would experience nausea, headache, drowsiness which can be fatal.

Take Diamox twice a day from two days before arrival in Leh and continue till the time to take the flight back from Ladakh. Just to be on the safe side, you might want to consult your physician before popping in the tablets!

Relax on the First Day

To avoid AMS, on the first day of arrival the suggestion is complete bed rest. Make minimal activities. This should ideally continue till lunch the next day. Post lunch, you can visit local sightseeing around Ladakh, like a couple of monasteries.

First Nubra Valley, then Pangong Lake

The two most popular places to visit from Leh are Nubra Valley and Pangong Lake. The trick is to first visit Nubra Valley and then Pangong Lake. Altitude of Pangong Lake is 4250 m/ 17250 feet. While that of Nubra Valley is around 3100 m/ 10000 feet. So, it is advisable to visit Nubra Valley after a couple of days after your arrival in Leh, followed by the trip to Pangong Lake. Thus, Pangong Lake visit would be more towards the end of your Ladakh trip, by when your body would already have been acclaimatised.

The Last Day Should be A Buffer Day

Weather is unpredictable in that part of the Himalayas. You never know when a snowfall or rainfall can block the road. On those days if you are returning from Nubra Valley or Pangong Lake, you might get stranded. So it is always advisable to stay the last day of your Ladakh trip in Leh. You can use it to go to visit local monasteries, the local market or a river rafting in the Indus Zanskar river confluence.

Book early

Last but not the least, book early. There are, for obvious reasons, only a handful of luxury-type hotels in Ladakh. They get booked pretty early. Even the airfares tend to increase steeply as the tourist months of Ladakh approach. So, an early planning and booking your Ladakh trip would not burn a hole in your pocket.

Best time to visit Leh Ladakh

Anytime from May to October is a safe bet. It does not rain in Ladakh as it falls on the rain shadow belt. Before May the mountain passes are either closed or can get blocked for hours or days due to sudden snowfall. The same applies from November onwards. If you are planning for a road trip to Leh from Manali or Srinagar, do keep an eye on the dates the Kunzum Pass/ Rohtang Pass (on Manali – Leh Highway) or Zojilla Pass (on Srinagar – Leh Highway) open and close.
