Reaching Lakshadweep Islands

While you can reach the Lakshadweep Islands both via flight and ship, the former is preferable when it comes to Diving Tours. Since the ship has a fixed schedule, there is less flexibility. With the flight option you can choose the duration of the tour, based on the number of dives you want to go for.

The flight to Lakshadweep Island starts from Bangalore, hops in at Kochi and lands at the Agatti airport. Both Kochi and Bangalore are well-connected international airports. So, if you are flying from any other place in India or world, you can reach these cities a day prior to your Lakshadweep flight.

When you land in Agatti airport, there are 3 Dives Centres – that of Bangaram, Kavaratti and Kadmat. Considering all the factors, Bangaram and Kavaratti are the best options. So, we have highlighted the details of these two islands.

Why Diving in Lakshadweep

Lakshadweep Islands is one of the most unexplored islands of the world. It is far from commercialization, which has become a major worry for divers. So, when they go for diving, to their horror, they find the place has already been “taken over” by divers who came early. They have disturbed the sites and the sanctity of the place. Be it the Great Barrier Reef of Australia or other dive sites in the world, this is a phenomenon that you cannot deny.
The scenario is very different when it comes to Lakshadweep. There are never too many divers. In fact, there are more chances that you are the only one in the place. So, its all yours…the rich marine life, the live corals, the colorful fishes….Enjoy a perfect diving, which is how it is supposed to be. And being a PADI Certified Centre the standard is at par with all the world class Diving Centres.
So, lets put it this way, if not Lakshadweep, then where?
Surely, it is the best Diving Destination in the world!

Choosing the Right Dive Centre

While all islands have their own Dive Centres, when you fly into Lakshadweep, Bangaram and Kavaratti are the best options. When it comes to experience in diving-wise there is not much of a difference, honestly. Both are PADI Certified. Both are headed by the same management and authority. So, facility-wise there is hardly a difference.

So, the question is, which one do you go for?

The answer lies more in the other parameters. If your aim is just diving, then Kavaratti Island is more suited. It is more economical. In fact, this is the reason that for PADI Certification, where the objective is more to enjoy diving, this island is prefered. And since a lot of Indians want to go for Diving, we have associated Kavaratti Island more with the PADI Certification course, though one can also do the certification in Bangaram (at a higher cost).

Bangaram, on the other side, offers a couple of more things beyond diving. Unlike Kavaratti, Bangaram Island is uninhabited. So, just a few beach resorts and that’s it. It is much more scenic. Just across Bangaram is Thinnakara, which has luxury tents. You can stay either in Thinnakara or Bangaram.  They share a common Dive Centre. So, whether you stay in Thinnakara or Bangaram, the diving experience is the same.

There are some other factors too that can help you choose the right island. You can island hop to the nearby Parali 1 and Parali 2 islands from Thinankara and Bangaram. Among all the islands in Lakshadweep, alcohol is served only in Bangaram. Typically, Thinnakara or Bangaram is prefered by professionals and experienced divers. Because after the diving experience they can enjoy the stunning vista of Bangaram and Thinnakara.

The Dive Sites and Facilities

As a matter of fact, only a handful of tourists visit this unexplored islands each year. So, the Duve Sites are far from commercialized. They are very well-preserved and virgin. Surely, there cannot be a better place to dive.

When it comes to dive sites, Kavaratti Island has at least 8 scuba diving sites namely South Tip (E), Turtle Nest, Wall of Wonder, Sea Fan Garden, South Tip (W), Wind Mill, Glaser Garden and Harbour Mouth.
Bangaram Island has at least 8 Dive Sites namely Grand Canine, Shallow Point, Manta Point, Little Canine, Thinnakara Hills, Bangaram Reef, Harbour Mouth and Thinnakara Reef.

Since all the diving sites are PADI Certified, they maintain the highest standard when it comes to safety and security. So, you can be rest assured of the facilities available. All the gears are available at the Dive Centre. So you may not bring any, unless you are too keen on using your own things.
