Heritage Walk in Jodhpur Rajasthan: Beyond Jodhpur Fort and Jodhpur Palace

The Journey Begins...

Jodhpur is one of the most grand cities of Rajasthan. The colour that stands out distinctly is the blue colour, as most of the houses are painted in blue. The majestic Mehrangarh Fort dominates over the city. On one side of the old city is blue and at the other end is the start of the Thar desert. So, what better way to explore the city than take a customized private heritage walk – going through the allies, peeing into the local craftsmen at work or buying a small souvenir from one of the local shops?

Walking through the Bylanes

Honestly, there is no one-type heritage walk. A lot would depend on the guests preferences and choices. So, most of the time our guides try to understand guests’ preferences before embarking one. It can start near Fateh Poll (one of the entrances to Mehrangarh Fort).

Then it can continue for about 3 KM or 2 miles till the other most famous landmark of the city – the Clock Tower Market. The walk encompasses the old city and one visits elegant heritage buildings, havelis and step wells. Each building in the old city is painted blue from inside as well as outside.

We can try to organise high tea at a local house to understand and interact with the locals. Enroute we visit Pachetia Hills. It is a panoramic point offering you the spot to take a perfect photo.

Touching the Chords of Bygone Days

After this we can visit Padmasar lake and Ranisar lake, both these lakes were used for water supply in olden times and now your view points to admire Mehrangarh Fort. Then we keep moving in the bylanes of the old city  and move to the old city market place which hosts textile, spices, utensils, restaurants and various other shops.

We also visit various temples like Gang Syam Ji and Krishna or the famous stepwell of Toor ka jhalra.

Markets and Local Shops

In today’s world of online shopping or shopping from malls, we think such a walk through the marketplace can bring in some charm. So, while some want to peep more into the jewellery and ornament shops, others can fancy the food stalls, still others may be into clothes or pottery. There are certain streets which are dedicated to sell one particular thing, thus offering an option to even see wares being created right in front of you. Sometimes even see local tribes passing through with their cattle in their colorful attire and big turbans.

The intention is never to encourage anyone to buy anything. If anything, we would strongly suggest our guests buy only if they are absolutely sure of the quality and price. The intention is to find the old charm of colorful markets, discover some really “local” stuff, takes lots of photographs and discover a world that is so unique in its color and flavor!

Tasting The Street Food of Jodhpur

Throughout the tour you can see and taste local delicacies as the old city is famous for local street food like kachoris (fried snacks), ras malai (sweets dipped in milk and cream), ladoos (sweets) and many other tasty options. The city is famous for Mirchi Bada (Chilly snacks). One famous shop where you can sample this culinary delight and kachoris is Janta Sweet Home.

Then one more must-try dish is Gulab Jamun ki Sabzi which can be tasted at Shandar Restaurant. Another delicious delight is Dal Bati which should be sampled at Bhawani Dal Baati Churma.

A restaurant called Jharokha is an open sky restaurant which offers stunning city views, multi cuisine menu and is especially famous for its pancakes. Shandar Sweet House is a restaurant famous for ghee sweets, light snacks and must try dishes here are Dahi Wada, Lahsun Dal and Gatta curry. (We advise our guests to also check at their end before trying the dishes or exploring the restaurants!)

All's Well That Ends Well

The royal heritage city has its own myths, legends and historical charm which beckons one and all. Take the Heritage walk to discover a new world, beyond the grandeur of Jodhpur.
