Mysore Palace

Mysore Palace is a historical palace and a royal residence at Mysore. So, if you are visiting Bangalore, this is just a trip for a day or two. In fact, Mysore Palace now one of the most famous tourist attractions in India.In fact, after the Taj Mahal, it is the most visited monument in India with more than 6 million annual visitors. Historically, it is the official residence of the Wadiyar dynasty and the seat of the Kingdom of Mysore. The palace is in the centre of Mysore, and faces the Chamundi Hills eastward. The Rulers of Mysore built the actual palace in the 15th century. However, an unfortunate fire outbreak gutted it. Then they rebuilt a new revamped one from 1897 and 1912, which the visitors see today.

Brindavan Garden Mysore

The Brindavan Gardens is a garden located near Mysore. It is visited by close to 2 million tourists per year. Thus, the garden is one of the major attractions of Mysore. It lies adjoining the Krishnarajasagara Dam, which is built across the river Kaveri. Sir Mirza Ismail, who was the Deewan of Mysore, built the beautiful garden from 1927 to 1932. When you visit Mysore, the best time to visit the Brindavan Gardens is evening when the entire garden is lit up. Not only that, there are musical lights which are controlled by the music. No wonder, it is a sight worth seeing.

Jagmohan Palace

The Jagmohan Palace is another charming palace in Mysore. the Wodeyars, who were the rulers of  Mysore, built it in 1861. At that time is was their official residence. Needless to say, the spotless white palace is a feast to the eyes of the onlookers.

St. Philomena Church

St. Philomena’s Cathedral is a Catholic Church, which is the cathedral of the Diocese of Mysore. It is also known as St. Joseph’s Cathedral. It was constructed in 1936, under the influence of the Neo Gothic style. The Cologne Cathedral in Germany is said to have inspired its architecture. In fact, it is one of the tallest churches in Asia.

Daly, a French architecture designed the Church. The floor plan of the cathedral resembles a cross. The cathedral has a crypt that houses a statue of St. Philomena. The twin spires of the church are 175 feet (53 m) in height and they resemble the spires of the Cologne Cathedral and also the spires of the St. Patrick’s Church in New York City. The main hall (nave), which can seat up to 800 people, contains stained glass windows depicting scenes from the birth of Christ, the Last Supper, the Crucifixion, the Resurrection and the Ascension of Christ. It is considered to be Asia’s second largest church. When you visit Mysore, you should not miss this beautiful church.

Chamundi Hills And Chamundeshwari Temple

The Chamundeshwari Temple is a sacred Hindu temple, which is located on the top of Chamundi Hills. It is about 13 km from Mysore city centre. The temple was named after Chamundeshwari or Durga, who had been a tutelary deity of the Mysore Maharajas for centuries.

Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary

Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary is a bird sanctuary near Mysore. It is the largest bird sanctuary in the state, which spans over 40 acres (16 ha) in area. In fact, the Bird Sanctuary comprises of six islets on the banks of the Kaveri river. Riverine reed beds cover the banks of the islands, while broadleaf forests cover the islands.

The sanctuary has recorded around 170 bird species of birds. Of these, the famous ones are the painted stork, Asian openbill stork, common spoonbill, woolly-necked stork. The black-headed ibis, lesser whistling duck, Indian shag, stork-billed kingfisher, egret, cormorant also breed at Ranganathittu regularly. While the park is also home to a large flock of streak-throated swallows, the great stone plover, and river tern also nest there. In fact, Ranganathittu is a popular nesting site. About 50 pelicans have made Ranganathittu their permanent home.

During winter months, from mid-December, as many as 40,000 birds congregate at Ranganathittu, some migrating from Siberia, Latin America and parts of north India. While, during January and February, more than 30 species of migratory birds can be found in the sanctuary.
