Auroville and Matrimandir

Auroville is suppossed to be an experimental township in Pondicherry. It was founded in 1968 by Mirra Alfassa, who is fondly known as “the Mother”. The famous architect Roger Anger designed the township. The concept of the township is to foster a places where men and women of all countries can live in peace and harmony, irrespective of their creeds, color and race.

In the middle of the town is the glittering dome-shaped Matrimandir, which is considered to be “a symbol of the Divine’s answer to man’s aspiration for perfection”. The entire area surrounding the Matrimandir is called the Peace Area. Inside the Matrimandir there is pin-drop silence. Here, you will find a chamber of polished white marble referred to as “a place to find one’s consciousness”.

Heritage Walk in The White Town

The White Town in Pondicherry is where you would find the rich flavors of the French colony. The streets are mostly names after renowned French personalities. You would find many houses that bear a strong resemblance of the French empire. Many of them are converted to hotels and restaurants. You would also find parks and other interesting handicraft shops in the area.

This is a perfect place for a heritage walk. One of the interesting things is the colorful graffiti that you find on the walls of some of those buildings. A Walk through the hallowed streets of the White Town is indispensable during your visit to Pondicherry. 

Pondicherry Museum

If you are interested in antique sculptures, then Pondicherry Museum is a place you should visit.

It has a collection of rare bronze and stone sculptures from Pallava and Chola dynasties. The furniture, mirrors, porcelain and cutlery from the French period are worth seeing. Apart from that, you can also can find a geology room, fossil room, a collection of handicrafts, coins, church relics present within the museum. The Pondicherry Museum is one of the most visited places by history seekers, travelers and connoisseurs.

Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

The grand Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is situated on the south boulevard of Pondicherry. It is a classic masterpiece of the oriental specimen of Gothic architecture. It contains rare stained glass panels depicting events from the life of Christ and saints of the Catholic Church.

This 100 years old historical church is 50 m long, 48 m wide and 18 m high with Latin rite cross shape in aerial view is in Gothic style. 24 main columns hold the structure. Statues of the four evangelists were erected, beneath which there are four lamp posts describing their lives and the inviting Jesus and the twelve apostles on the front facade. The church is gorgeously illuminated with chandeliers, focus and flood lights in the evening.

Immaculate Conception Cathedral

Immaculate Conception Cathedral is the cathedral mother church for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Pondicherry and Cuddalore. The church is also known as Samba Kovil, where “Kovil” means church. The church is one of the oldest tourist sites in Pondicherry. It was built around 300 years ago. The bishop house is also situated in this church.

Arulmigu Manakula Vinayagar Temple

Though Pondicherry is more famous for the Churches, the Manakula Vinayagar Temple, dedicated to the Hindu Lord Ganesha, is a popular pilgrimage site and tourist destination in Pondicherry. The temple is more than 500 years old. So, you will find the architecture of the temple quite interesting. In fact, it is one of the oldest temples in the region. One of the main attractions of the temple is the golden chariot, which is made of gold weighing 7.5 kg . The height and breadth of the chariot is 10 feet and 6 feet, respectively. The chariot was fully made up in teakwood covered by copper plates duly engraved with beautiful art works and the plates duly attached with golden rakes.

Lady Des Angels - Notre Dames Church

Our Lady of Angels Church, which is also known as Église Notre-Dame des Anges, White Chapel, Kaps Koil, is the fourth oldest church in Puducherry. It follows Roman Catholic sect of Christianity The original structure was built in Greco Roman architecture by Napoleon III in 1855, with the architect being Louis Guerre. It is the only church that offers mass in three languages namely French, Tamil and English.

Our Lady of Angels Church is a working church with hourly prayer and daily services. The chapel was controlled by Capuchin priests, Holy Spirit Fathers subsequently and finally during 1887 changed hands to Foreign Mission Fathers from Paris. It is one of the most prominent landmarks in Puducherry, facing the Bay of Bengal.

Beach Road

The Beach Road of Pondicherry is the place to be in the early morning and evening, if not any time of the day. Situated on the Eastern coast of the Indian peninsula, the Beach road provides a perfect location to watch the sunrise. 

In the evening, people – both local and tourists – are out on the beach road for a pleasant walk. There are some great restaurants and handicraft shops skirting the road. The fact that vehicles of any sort are not allowed in the beach road in the evening makes it ideal and safe for the casual relaxing evening walks. Sit on the benches when you are tired or just walk into any beach-side cafe, Beach Road provides in Pondicherry has a charm of its own. 

Sunday Market

The Sunday Market in Pondicherry is the most famous local market in the city. As the name suggest, the colorful market is open only on Sundays. So, locals and tourists alike flock this market. It is held in the famous Mahatma Gandhi Road in Pondicherry. You will find a wide variety of products available here at very affordable rates. So, you will be able to shop apparel, metal plates, cups, scarves, pots, shoes and much more. If you are a book-lover, there are chances that stumble over some rare collection.
